What is Golden Milk & How to Make the Golden Paste.
The main ingredient in a golden milk is Turmeric, which is one of the most highlighted spices in Ayurvedic medicine, and is believed to be one of the most therapeutic of all the spices. What I love most about these golden milk lattes is that there is a very strong earthiness to them that always seems to leave me feeling grounded.
On the Japanese island of Okinawa, turmeric tea is a way of life. The population drinks this traditional favorite daily, and numerous studies have linked turmeric with wide-ranging anti-inflammatory effects. Perhaps this helps to explain why the people of Okinawa have one of the world’s longest average life spans: 81.2 years.
Ingredients for Golden Paste.
Golden milk also has been used to help aid digestion, increase circulation, and help with a better nights sleep.
How to make the Golden Paste
Tumeric and water.
Add the tumeric to water and stir.
Tumeric is rich in antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds, and a number of minerals such as iron, and magnesium.
Golden Milk also has all of the components together that help to make the active ingredient in Turmeric (Curcumin) highly bio available. By combining turmeric, coconut oil, and black pepper together, the pepper and oil helps to move the curcumin into the blood stream through the lymphatic system, and prevents it from being immediately filtered out by the liver.
Why add black pepper?
Studies have shown that when turmeric is combined with these other components, the bio availability can be more than 2000% when compared to if it was taken alone
The sharp taste of pepper comes from the alkaloid piperine, which enhances the absorption and the anti-inflammatory effects of turmeric. Plus, black pepper contains a number of essential nutrients, including manganese, iron and vitamin K, and is commonly used to calm digestive issues.
Coconut Oil
I like to add coconut oil to my Paste. Some choose not to, therefore you may have to add a little bit more water to your paste after cooking it so it does not become too dry.
After you have cooked you water, tumeric and pepper for approx. 5 min then remove from heat and stir in coconut oil to form a smooth paste.
Add Cinnamon
Optional: I like to add organic cinnamon and organic vanilla to my paste after it has been removed from the heat.
For extra flavour feel free to add a tsp. of organic vanilla.
How to Store
Let cool for a bit then put your Golden Paste into a glass jar with a lid and store in the fridge for up to 2 weeks.
Just add the Golden Paste to a warm beverage of choice.
Alternative Milk
Some like to add a tbsp. to their alternative milk of choice for a rich beverage. Just warm milk, add golden paste and stir.
Tea of Choice
I like to add this golden paste to my favourite tea with milk.
Smoothie
You can also add the golden paste to your favourite smoothie.
After you have added the golden paste to your warm beverage or smoothie of choice you can sprinkle with cinnamon, nutmeg, cardamon…
Enjoy throughout the year but this is an especially wonderful drink in the fall and winter.
🙂

Notes
Curcumin — the main active compound in turmeric — has been shown to possess powerful anti-aging properties, which are attributed to its potent antioxidant potential. Cellular senescence occurs when cells stop dividing. As you age, senescent cells accumulate, which is believed to accelerate aging and disease progression. Research demonstrates that curcumin activates certain proteins, including sirtuins and AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK), which helps delay cellular senescence and promotes longevity. Plus, curcumin has been shown to combat cellular damage and significantly increase the lifespan of fruit flies, roundworms, and mice. This compound has been shown to postpone age-related disease and alleviate age-related symptoms as well. In a comprehensive summary of 700 studies published by ethnobotanist James A. Duke, PhD., in the October, 2007 issue of Alternative & Complementary Therapies, Duke found extensive evidence that turmeric can reduce inflammation and support brain and joint health.
